We're finally ready! I think...

When we had our last interview with our caseworker about a month ago, he told us that we should have a new kind of "72 hour kit." He said we should determine what we think we would need to have in terms of gear/money, in the possibility that we were chosen for a baby without much time to prepare. Well, I can now say that we are prepared! We, and by we I mean I, have been ordering the things that we needed online for the past month when I found great deals. Today we received the last item, the car seat. Now, all we need is the baby!
We actually received the extra car seat base before we received the car seat. We thought that was pretty funny! We have the formula, in several varieties just in case the baby doesn't do well with one of them, bottles, diapers and wipes, onesies, cloth diapers for anything, baby bath tub, baby soap and lotion, diaper pail, noggin nest (to avoid flat heads),
and of course the bassinet.
We also had to get a new camera, since ours quit working, after 5 years of great service. So we got an inexpensive one until we can afford a better camera later on. I wouldn't say it was a "necessity", but we felt we needed it so we can take pictures of our first moments with the baby.
If anyone knows of anything else that they couldn't live without in their first weeks home with baby, we would love to know! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Diapers, wipes, diaper cream, shampoo, lotion, baby thermometer, onesies!, boppy, blankets...

Check out your local craigslist, you can get everything you need on there for super cheap. Formula is crazy expensive but you can find a lot of people giving it away on craigslist that got free samples but don't need it.

And if you need formula, you will also need bottles! And pacifiers.

Ginny, you don't know me (Devri Halgren) but I have known Mark my entire life. We grew up in the same family ward. :-) I just came across your blog and it's so neat to catch up on how you and Mark are doing! I'm so excited for you both!!!

Some other ideas of my own are baby washcloths and baby powder. I'm a huge believer in baby powder! I used it for the first year on our daughter not only on her diaper with every single diaper change, but on her creases (under arms, under chin, etc.) to prevent chafing. I suggest having a couple on hand but in all honesty, the one thing I always suggest to new parents is a baby Papasan (like this one: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2861767) It vibrates and plays classical music and was the biggest life saver for us! Our daughter slept in it at night for 2 months or more straight because it was the only way she would sleep. It was very comforting to her when she couldn't be held constantly. It also really helped with her acid reflux which most newborns suffer from because it helped her sleep propped up. I highly suggest one to everyone. I know you can find them at Target too and I've seen them at Walmart in the past as well. :-) I would also suggest having Simethicone on hand for when your little one gets that uncomfortable baby gas. I didn't have any at first and I sure wish I did. It helps a lot. Other than that, you will figure out what other things you need as you figure out what your baby's needs are. Sounds like you are very well prepared!

Best of luck to both of you and I can't wait to hear when you get to welcome a new little one into your family! :-)

Ginny you don't know me but I met Mark through Robert in college. . .I read your blog often and I am very excited that you might soon have a new baby in your home. I recommend a swing like that papasan. We have one and we love it. I just had a baby in Feb. and she loves to sleep in it. A stroller for your car seat. . . a baby carrier (I like baby bjorn but they're pricey). Cloth diapers make great burp rags but you might like actual burp rags. Target and other stores sell formula dividers/holder. They hold three servings of formula so you can make bottles on the go. I agree about the pacifiers. They sell the kind that are handed out at the hospital. Also a diaper bag!!! I don't nurse so I don't use the boppy. Oh and a new camera was definately a necessity! You'll want pictures. . . lots of pictures. My favorite lotion is baby magic-smells so good :) Baby monitor as well! Look at them online so you can see customer reviews cause some make a lot of noise with interference and such. Infant tylenol just in case. Some recommend baby detergent to wash the clothes in at least until you know they won't have a reaction your regular detergent. Hand mittens and hats to prevent the baby from scratching itself. A baby hygiene kit (fingernail clippers, tweezers, nasal blue thing, etc) that's the only thing I can think of calling it. They sell that stuff all in a kit. . . Hope that helps. Good luck. I hope that you will have a new one joining you very soon!!!

I would steer clear from the baby powder for diapers. We did it with Ethan all the time and then he kept getting diaper rashes. I guess the cornstarch feeds off of yeast and yeast likes to grow in dark, warm, moist places (aka-baby's bum). You could use it for other things and I have heard a mom using it between the diaper and the pants...not on the baby's bum...just to have a fresher smell.

It looks like you've got a pretty good list. Meals in the freezer...you'll be tired after being up with the baby and meals ready to eat are always wonderful. GOOD LUCK!

I'm so happy for you two. I've been sending out some prayers on behalf of you two and the birth mom.

I think you have some great items and suggestions so I'll not add to it.
